Introduction

At the end of 2023, local authorities received additional money for the repair and maintenance of roads, bridges, drainage culverts, cycleways, and footways. The funding was unlocked from the Government's Network North plan made possible by reallocated HS2 funding.

Southampton City Council received:

  • £378,400 Additional Budget 2023 highways maintenance and pothole repair funding
  • £268,000 2023/24. Local highway maintenance: additional funding from 2023 to 2034
  • £268,000 2024/25. Local highway maintenance: additional funding from 2023 to 2034

Southampton’s Highway Maintenance Funding – 2024/25

The amount of investment in the maintenance of Southampton’s roads, bridges, highway drainage, footways, and cycleways in 2024/25 is £4,396,000.  It is anticipated the proportion spent on road repairs and resurfacing will be £3,250,000, including the additional Network North Funding (£268,000). In the first quarter of 2024/25:

  • This funding supported the delivery of 21 schemes
  • The value of work completed was £797,309
  • 24,500 square metres (1.06 square miles) of road surface was repaired
  • £1,895,000 planned for delivery during the next quarter
