Services for schools: Speech & Language School Assistants (SALSA)
The experienced practitioners of the Language Intervention Team (SALSA Outreach) offer different services packages to suit your school’s needs.
The SALSA Outreach team provides:
- Screening and assessment
- Interventions and staff training to maximise the progress of children with speech, language and communication needs
- Supports schools in drawing out the full potential of their students’ abilities
- Supports core educational concerns including behaviour and literacy
- Has developed the services to acknowledge the impact of SLCN within the classroom
- Programmes and interventions specifically target language for learning, helping to bridge the gap between verbal and written skills
The Language Intervention Team consists of experienced and specially trained Speech & Language Schools Assistants (SALSAs) receiving clinical supervision from a specialist NHS speech and language therapist. Each SALSA comes from a teaching and education background which enables them to work with school staff to identify and plan interventions for speech and language support across all year groups. The team is led by Helen O’Donovan.
It has been an absolute pleasure having our SALSA work with the school again this year. The impact she has on our students with the work she does, as well as her insight and care is very much appreciated by all staff and students. Bitterne Park Secondary School
Our SALSA has been fantastic to work alongside this year. She has gone above and beyond for the children and has been really supportive of the staff. I look forward to continuing to work with her next year! Mansel Park Primary
We love working alongside our SALSA, she is a valuable resource to us in terms of experience, advice and support. She is always willing to offer help in order to best support the children. She is adaptable to the ever-changing school environment. Both teachers and TAs are happy to seek her out when she is in school to ask questions and welcome the advice provided. Portswood Primary
