Streets and spaces framework
The approved document sets down a hierarchy within the city centre that has been based on the quality of place rather than purely the movement of traffic. Increasingly studies are demonstrating the critical importance of an attractive public realm to the health and well-being of city centre users and residents, and to the continuing economic competitiveness of city centres.
The primary purpose of the framework is to provide guidance to prospective developers and designers on the importance of considering all users of city streets particularly pedestrians, when designing new public realm, and for those designs to be contextually relevant to the needs, functions and activities of a particular street or space.
