Tributes paid to former Council Leader Alec Samuels
Tributes have been paid to Alec Samuels, a long-serving politician who recently passed away at the age of 92
Mr Samuels became the Leader of Southampton City Council in 2007, through to 2010 when he stepped down from the role at 80 years old. He was subsequently made an Honorary Alderman in 2011.
Conservative Group Leader, Councillor Daniel Fitzhenry, said:
“On behalf of the Conservative group it is very sad news to hear of the passing of Alec Samuels. Alec was a huge inspiration and guiding light to many of us, always very supportive and professional.
“His deep intellect, curiosity and attention to detail, as well as his warm affection for his team will be deeply missed. Alec was deeply supportive to myself and Councillor Moulton, right up until recently advising and guiding us when we were running the council. We will miss him greatly and are very honoured to have known and learnt from him.”
The Right Worshipful Lord Mayor of Southampton, Councillor Jacqui Rayment, said:
“Alec was a true gentleman whose dedication to the City never wavered. He served the council over a number of years, including being the Leader. His interest in the city showed though his involvement in heritage organisations and he never hesitated to raise concerns if he believed In something. We send our condolences to his family at this time.”
Leader of Southampton City Council, Councillor Satvir Kaur, said:
“While our paths sadly never crossed in the council itself, I know Alec Samuels was highly regarded and very well respected by all. He embodied public duty by serving as a City Councillor for over 30 years, including a period as Leader of the Council.
“Even after his retirement from politics at the age of 80, he remained active in civic life through his involvement with areas like Southampton Common, something that I enjoyed discussing with him and how we can improve our parks.
“I’m sure many will remember him fondly for lots of reasons, though his unwavering kindness and courtesy to both his allies and political opponents, as well as his passion to make Southampton a better place throughout, stand out above all else.”
