Southampton City Art Gallery unveils latest donations
Southampton City Art Gallery is displaying a selection of works that have been generously gifted to the Gallery this year
They will become part of the current 'Renaissance to the Present Day' exhibition which shows highlights from the Gallery’s nationally significant collection.
The new, donated acquisitions include:
- 'Pillbox with Incoming Tide I', 2021, by Julian Perry, which has been gifted by an anonymous donor. In 2022 the City Art Gallery presented a major exhibition of Perry’s work: 'There Rolls the Deep' supported by selected works from Southampton’s collection
- A series of 'Meteorite Landings' by the Turner-Prize nominated Cornelia Parker, made by heating a 400-year-old iron meteorite until glowing hot and then using it to burn maps of different locations. Commissioned by the Multiple Store, the works were donated by Nicholas Sharp
- A painting by British artist Juliette Losq and etchings by Sudanese artist, Ibrahim El-Salahi, donated by long-time supporter of the Gallery, Louise Hallett
Councillor Lorna Fielker, Leader of Southampton City Council said: "I am very excited by the latest unveiling of works at Southampton City Art Gallery and incredibly grateful to the generous donors. Art brings people together and it plays a huge role in people’s mental well-being and education. Our gallery puts Southampton on the map and is instrumental in our city’s culture."
Southampton City Art Gallery has an internationally renowned fine art collection spanning eight centuries. These latest acquisitions will add to the Gallery’s contemporary holdings, which include over 30 Turner Prize artists.
