Not long to go until Southampton welcomes the Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay
Southampton is proud to welcome the Queen’s Baton Relay on Wednesday 6 July 2022, where the Baton will be carried by ten local Batonbearers across the city centre.
The Queen’s Baton Relay will start its journey in the city at Mount Pleasant Junior School and then it will travel through the city centre parks and past cultural points of interest like the Titanic Engineers’ Memorial, Cultural Quarter and the Bargate along the route. It will also briefly visit the Solent Sky Museum.
The last part of the Batons journey through Southampton will be via hovercraft where it will be taken onwards to Portsmouth.
The Batonbearer will be greeted by a brass band welcome fanfare from pupils from Mount Pleasant Junior School who have been working closely with the Southampton Music Hub. In the city centre, the relay will be joined by Southampton Ukulele Jam, Saints Brass, Art Asia, Southampton Sea Cadets, Cheerleaders from Liberty Pride and junior rowers from Itchen Imperial Rowing Club.
Key viewing points for the public to see the Baton in the city centre, include (approximate timings):

- 4:52pm Bargate
- 4:57pm Westquay on the Esplanade
Councillor Satvir Kaur, Leader of Southampton City Council, said:

It’s great to be able to host the Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay here and during the Baton’s journey around our city, we are pleased it will be engaging with local school children to help inspire a generation, as well as give an opportunity to showcase everything great Southampton has to offer, from our stunning city parks to amazing culture and heritage.”
The Queen’s Baton Relay is a 294-day journey across the Commonwealth that began on 7 October 2021. The Baton will visit all 72 nations and territories on its way to the Birmingham 2022 opening ceremony for the start of the Commonwealth Games. The Baton contains The Queen’s Message to the Commonwealth.
During the domestic (England) leg of the Queen’s Baton Relay, Birmingham 2022 is committed to engaging communities across England with the Relay and the Games.
