Pupils from Newlands Primary School took part in a ‘view through the window’ drawing competition back in May 2023.
Newlands Primary School and contractors Darcy Construction ran a drawing competition where pupils were asked to get creative and draw what they could see on the construction site of the new Resource Base for Deaf Children currently being built at the school. Windows have been installed in the safety wall to allow pupils to see the progress of the works.
There were two winners of the drawing competition who were both presented with £30 book vouchers by Darcy Construction Site Manager, Phil Ware.
The new resource base which was designed by Southampton City Council’s in-house Design Services Team will be a single storey extension of the existing school and will be home to:
- Two new classrooms
- Two group rooms
- Staff working room
- Toilet facilities
The works on the new resource base began in spring and are anticipated to complete later this year.
Karen Mellor, Headteacher at Newlands Primary School said:
"We are delighted with the progress of the works so far. The children are really excited about the changing nature of the construction and love watching through the special viewing windows. Some were lucky enough to have a guided tour of the works with Darcy’s Site Manager, Phil Ware, and couldn't believe how quickly it is progressing!"
Councillor Alex Winning, Cabinet Member for Children and Learning at Southampton City Council said:
"The new resource base at Newlands Primary School will ensure that deaf children and those with complex needs are given the best start in life in a high-quality setting and will ensure that no child is left behind. The expansion will allow more deaf pupils to have their needs met by creating more local school places in Southampton.
"I look forward to seeing the resource base complete and ready for pupils to use and enjoy".
