Mayor of Southampton plants a Cedar Tree at Cedar Lodge Park as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy
The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a unique, UK-wide, tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, by inviting people to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee"
Today (Friday 11 March), the Right Worshipful Mayor of Southampton, Councillor Alex Houghton joined Civic Chiefs around the country to plant a tree to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
The National Association of Civic Officers (NACO) has organised a ‘tree planting day’ as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy Project, with the hope that as many civic leaders as possible will plant a tree on the seventieth day of the year, to mark the seventieth anniversary of The Queen’s accession to the throne.
This morning, the Mayor of Southampton planted a cedar tree in Cedar Lodge Park, adding to the 110 trees that have already been planted in the city as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy. This includes 40 trees in Townhill Green and 70 oaks in Riverside Park.
The Right Worshipful Mayor of Southampton, Councillor Alex Houghton comments:
“It was an honour to join Councils from around the Country today and plant a tree in recognition of Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee. The Queen’s Green Canopy will become a legacy for our city, and as we bid to become UK City of Culture 2025, this is another exciting opportunity to put the city of Southampton on the map, regionally, nationally and internationally. The city’s commitment to sustainability and the wider environment is something that we will embed across many of our strategic priorities."
Southampton City Council has announced plans to mark the Queen’s 70-year reign, which includes activities such as The Big Platinum Festival in Mayflower Park, Jubilee afternoon tea with the Mayor of Southampton and street parties. Find out more about events for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.
SeaCity Museum will also be opening a Queen’s Jubilee exhibition from April 2022 showcasing Southampton’s Royal connections of the past. The exhibition will be on show in the Southampton Stories gallery.
