A sunny meadow with a hedge and some treesHampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust is partnering with Southampton City Council with support from Southampton Football Club and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, to create a ‘Wilder Southampton’. The project will bring people together to find creative, community-led ways to ensure nature can thrive across the city. Two new Wilder Communities Officers will work with local groups to develop initiatives to make the city greener and wilder, providing support, advice and practical help together with community action, ideas and conservation.

Jill Doubleday, one of the Wilder Communities Officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, says:

“We believe that strong, healthy communities depend on a thriving natural environment. With ever increasing pressures from pollution, development and climate change, it is vital that everyone can play their part in turning around the fortunes for our local wildlife and habitats.”

Councillor Lisa Mitchell, Cabinet Member for Housing and the Green Environment adds:

“We have been working with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust for some years and I’m delighted that the work we've been doing with the Trust is now delivering exciting projects like 'Wilder Southampton' to our city. This partnership supports Our Green City priorities and will provide opportunities for communities to get involved through community ideas and action making our city greener and better for residents and wildlife.”
