Consultation launched on permanent 30mph speed limits on Bassett Avenue, The Avenue and surrounding roads

The proposals form part of a wider package of road safety improvements in the local area

Southampton City Council has launched a formal consultation on proposals to introduce a permanent 30mph speed limit along the A33 (Bassett Avenue and The Avenue) and adjoining roads. The consultation will give local residents, commuters and other key stakeholders an opportunity to share their feedback on the plans.

There is currently already a temporary 30mph speed limit on Bassett Avenue and The Avenue. This was introduced in May 2020 to improve safety along the corridor, which has historically experienced a high number of road traffic collisions. The reduced speed limit also supports a safer environment for those using the cycle facilities which have been developed along the route.

With this in mind, the council is now formally proposing a permanent 30mph speed limit on Bassett Avenue and The Avenue, as well as Bassett Green Road and Bassett Wood Road which are both currently subject to 40mph limits. A legal consultation on the proposals is now open and will enable wider resident, user and stakeholder feedback to be considered.

The proposals form part of a wider package of road safety improvements being delivered in the local area, including the potential introduction of 20mph speed limits and traffic calming measures in the Flowers Estate.

Councillor Jeremy Moulton, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Growth, says:
"Road safety is a key focus for us and we have already seen a real appetite for this with our new 20mph speed limit request process, which has generated wide interest from communities across the city. Likewise, on the A33 itself, the 30mph speed limit has been really well received. Together with reduced speed limits on other adjoining roads, and the wider road safety projects we’re delivering in the area, this will contribute to a much safer, accessible and welcoming environment. Our consultation is now open and we are keen to hear from as many people as possible in the local area so please do get involved."

The consultation is running until 11 February 2022 and can be accessed on the council’s transport website.
