We acknowledge and respect the concerns raised by some residents of nearby streets about the increased traffic in their areas, and urge you to consider the benefits that this trial is designed to bring to our entire community.
Firstly, the wider area has been sufering from horrific traffic violations for a long time now, and they had not been cause by the current trial, but highlighted by it. The responsibility for speed violations is on the drivers not abiding the law, and not on this, or any other, trial. We support the regulating and monitoring practices that have been put in place to assess traffic flows and environmental impacts, and we believe it is essential to allow these assessments to continue over the full trial period.
Secondly, it is crucial to recognise that vocal opposition can sometimes create the impression that the opposing viewpoint represents the majority. Research, such as recent debates surrounding Wales’ 20mph speed limit (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/mar/22/wales-20mph-speed-limit-cut-road-deaths-why-debate), has shown that vocal opponents often make their views appear more widespread than they truly are. In reality, many people support changes that improve the environment and quality of life, but may feel hesitant to speak out when faced with loud opposition. By continuing this trial, we can allow a fair assessment of its benefits without being swayed by those who are vocally opposed.
We believe that a successful transformation of Portswood high street into a more pedestrian-friendly area is a crucial step toward creating a healthier, more sustainable, and vibrant city.
