How to use hospital records at Southampton Archives

We hold patient registers showing the names, date and births of patients, the date they were admitted to the hospital and the date they were discharged or died. We also hold religious creed registers which mention the patient’s religious denomination.

Patient registers are subject to data protection restrictions. If the patient’s date of birth was within the last 100 years, their records will be closed to the public.

A wide range of photographs of Southampton hospitals and staff are available to view. The photographs show hospital buildings, medical personnel, visits from public figures, and hospital equipment. Our reading room has catalogues and indexes listing the available photos, which you are welcome to browse.

Finally, we hold various assorted hospital publications and pamphlets on a range of topics, including leaflets announcing the opening of new medical facilities such as x-ray departments and maternity wards, catalogues advertising hospital dress, letters, and financial estimates related to medical equipment and facilities.
