How to search for motor vehicle records at Southampton Archives

From 1903 until the centralisation of vehicle licensing at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA, then called DVLC) in 1978, local authorities were responsible for registering vehicles and renewing licences.

Southampton Archives holds three motor vehicle records collections: original declaration forms showing when a vehicle was first registered, index cards which give the class and make of vehicle and record if it was transferred to another authority, and pre-1920 vehicle registers.

The Southampton vehicle registration letters are OW, CR and TR. These letters are often prefixed by another letter e.g. AOW, BOW, COW. However, only the second and third letters matter when it comes to deciding if a vehicle was registered in Southampton. If a vehicle record has the OW, CR and TR letters on it, it is always from Southampton.

We have catalogues available in our reading room which list the forms, cards and registers available in our collections. They are organised according to registration letter and number, so you will need to know this before you arrive.
