Wyndham Court set to flourish

Residents at Wyndham Court in the city centre have been giving their ideas on how to improve the communal garden at their block and transform it into a valuable community space.

Currently the garden area is unloved and barely used, despite the fact that hundreds of people live in the inner city block. So local Neighbourhood Wardens and housing staff are keen to bring the garden back to life and make it an attractive and communal outdoor area that will benefit local residents. Together with the Junior Neighbourhood Wardens they recently organised a free event and invited everyone living in the block to attend. As well as fun games for the children, free refreshments, and a magnificent birds of prey display from Urban Wings, the afternoon was a chance for neighbours to complete a survey and put forward their suggestions for the future of their garden.

Ideas from residents included: improved landscaping, extra seating, more plants, installing play equipment and introducing things for children to do to reduce the noise of footballs bouncing off the brick walls. Residents were also keen to see an art and a gardening club established to bring the community together in the new look outdoor space.

These suggestions will help shape our future plans for the garden area and now the Neighbourhood Wardens and housing staff are looking into how we can take the ideas forward. Residents at the block will be kept informed of progress. If you live in Wyndham Court and have an idea for the garden area pleaseĀ get in touch with the Local Housing Office.

Wyndham Court is just the latest council block to focus on improvements to the communal garden. In recent years many garden areas have been improved in council neighbourhoods across the city to create safe and attractive outdoor spaces for residents without a garden of their own to enjoy.

As a result, lots of community gardening clubs have been established by tenants to help maintain these new look communal garden areas. These gardening clubs are flourishing and are proving really successful in empowering residents to come together to improve the look of their local neighbourhood and enjoy the many social and physical benefits of gardening.
