The danger growing in the shadows
The danger growing in the shadows
Since the outbreak of the virus, reports of domestic abuse and violence against women and girls (VAWG) have intensified so much The United Nations has declared a ‘Shadow Pandemic’.
Worryingly, the number of incidents of domestic abuse in Southampton is increasing year on year, with a rise in serious and violent crimes. And there is concern that many incidents go unreported due to the stigma that surrounds this type of violence.
Although these crimes are more likely to affect women and girls, we know that men and boys can be victims too.
As a council we are committed to working with other partners, including Hampshire Constabulary, to tackle this issue, prevent it from happening, support victims and ensure perpetrators are punished.
Members of our Housing Service team have been specially trained to support tenants who are victims of domestic abuse and our Health and Social Care site offers details of how to get support. Plus, our Violence Reduction Unit has received funding from the Home Office funding to:
- Increase women and girl’s safety in public spaces through increased CCTV and improved lighting in dark streets
- Tackle harmful attitudes and behaviours towards women and promote gender equality
- Raise awareness through campaigns including White Ribbon Day, Expect Respect, and a VAWG Conference on 17 February 2022
- Work closely with the Police, street pastors, Synergy Security, and night clubs to pursue predatory males, and support vulnerable people in St John Ambulance safe ‘pop up’ zones
- Create safe places in the city for women and girls to access support
