Supporting you to live safely at home
Supporting you to live safely at home
If you need to adjust your home to make it safer and enable you to live independently, you can apply for an adaptation. The work will depend on your individual needs and could range from a major job like installing a stair lift or a level access shower, to fitting smaller items like grab rails. It’s all about making your home more accessible, giving you greater independence and hopefully a better quality of life.
We know the service is in huge demand; last year we completed 653 minor adaptations and 334 major adaptations. To help us increase the number of jobs, reduce waiting times and make home life easier for even more Southampton residents, we are delighted to announce:
- Our Occupational Therapy team are currently recruiting two new staff members so we can carry out assessments faster
- The budget has been increased and our contractors are employing extra staff so that we can continue working hard to reduce waiting times
Having an adaptation at home can provide peace of mind so that tenants can live safely. Here are just a few comments from people who have benefitted:
“Having the walk-in shower fitted has made us feel much safer. The adaptation was carried out by a great team, who were courteous and proficient during the whole time.”
”The stairlift has been a godsend – absolutely brilliant. Before if my husband fell on the stairs it would have been terrible. Now I have no worries, it’s a lot easier for me. It’s made my life a lot easier and happier.”
“The installation of a shower room has made a lot of difference to my life in as much as I don't need assistance in hygiene, the bathroom is now well designed, and I feel safe in there. I no longer have to rely on my spouse to help me get in and out of a bath.”
Our staff and contractors follow strict health and safety guidelines when carrying out work and adhere to the government advice on COVID-19.
If you think you would benefit from adaptations to your home, please call us on 023 8083 3003. You may be referred to an Occupational Therapist for a home assessment and we will then discuss what options are available and how your request will be managed.
Alternatively, you may wish to consider purchasing and installing certain pieces of equipment in your home yourself. We can offer advice and guidance if you would like to discuss this with us before buying your own equipment. Remember, you must first ask our permission before undertaking any alteration work to your property.
