Sprinklers save lives

Fire sprinkler systems save lives, which is why we have installed them in every flat in 19 high-rise tower blocks, and why we’re rolling out the system to our supported housing and five storey blocks across the city.

Fire and rescue services say that sprinklers are the single most effective method for fighting the spread of fires in the early stages. In fact, over recent years, five fires in high-rise blocks in Southampton have been suppressed by the sprinkler systems before the fire service arrived – showing just how important the sprinklers are.

Installing sprinklers is just part of our multi-million-pound fire safety programme for council flats which also includes replacing flat entrance doors and communal doors, and fire stopping (filling holes with fire retardant material).

Keep your family safe

While we’re working hard and investing in making your homes safe, there are things that you can do at home to help protect you and your family.

Living in a block of flats does not increase your risk of fire, but it is essential that you know what to do in an emergency situation, and how you can play your part in keeping your home safe.

  • Make sure you know the fire evacuation procedure for your block. If you have any queries or concerns please contact your Local Housing Office.
  • Never leave any electrical devices or equipment on charge overnight as they can easily overheat and catch alight.
  • Always ensure communal areas, walkways and stairwells are kept clear of rubbish, clutter and personal belongings.
  • Remember that you cannot use a barbeque or store any combustible materials such as gas canisters on your balcony.
  • Make sure plug sockets aren’t overloaded, never leave the cooker or hob unattended while cooking, and remember not to light candles on unsafe surfaces, near fabric or papers.
  • Keep fire doors closed and report any damage you notice to a fire door in your block and remember never alter or tamper with your front door.

For any queries about fire safety please contact your Local Housing Office and check out Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service for lots more home safety tips and to find out if you’re eligible for a free Safe and Well visit from a fire safety officer.
