Northam's new block reps

One thing the pandemic has taught us is the importance of community. And a positive consequence of COVID-19 has been an increase in the number of council tenants offering to become block reps.

Spending more time at home, and getting to know neighbours better, means more people than ever want to work with us to make the local areas even cleaner, safer and nicer place to live.

On the Northam estate alone, nine residents have recently volunteered to become block reps. They will represent their neighbours, raise local issues and concerns and work with us to improve the housing service for everyone.

Some of the new block reps in Northam tell us why they got involved during the pandemic:

Arafa says: “Lockdown means I have had plenty of time to spend in my flat and playing outside the block with my kids. This has made me appreciate my surroundings and so I decided to make a difference to the area by becoming a block rep.”

Others are hoping to introduce exciting new initiatives for their neighbours, like Jane who has plans to set up a bike repair workshop. Jane said “Since lockdown I’ve got to know my neighbours much better, so I decided become a block rep to help others here to live a safe and happy life. I hope the new monthly bike repair workshop will benefit people on the estate.”

Even new residents are keen to play their part, as Alex explains: “I’ve only lived in Northam for a short period of time but the recent pandemic has shown the value of a strong community support network and through this role I hope to contribute to that.”

The new recruits in Northam will join our many other block and street reps across the city who constantly help us to improve our service and their local area. Some of the things our city-wide block and street reps have been involved with include:

  • Improving recycling systems in blocks by providing important feedback
  • Successfully campaigning for free green bins in communal garden areas
  • Suggesting important changes to the online repairs reporting form
  • Raising issues with the council – from fly tipping and parking issues to uncollected bins and uncut grass
  • Monitoring cleaning and green spaces around blocks to maintain standards
  • Making sure neighbours are well informed and up to date about important housing news, consultations and events.
