Neighbourhood Wardens making big difference

Our team of Neighbourhood Wardens are always busy improving our estates and council neighbourhoods to make them cleaner, greener, safer and nicer places to live

But did you know that you can put forward requests and suggestions for them to work on?

We want to be responsive to your ideas, so as well as the block cleaners and Neighbourhood wardens we have a small “project team” that can work on specific areas and tasks requested by tenants and housing staff.

The team of Neighbourhood Wardens has been working on projects across the city to make a real difference to many local communities.

Here is a flavour of what they’ve been up to recently:

Relocated bin area at Belvidere House

Following complaints from residents about fly-tipping and misuse of the bins, the project team relocated the bin area. This has helped to control the bins and make the block look nicer. The residents are now planning to create a small garden where the bins used to be.

Tackling motorbike nuisance in the woods near Steventon Road, Harefield and Wood Close, Sholing

The team installed kissing gates that allow access for pedestrians and push chairs but stop motorbikes and bicycles.

Preventing fly-tipping at Taranto Court, Lordswood

The team created a new Eco-plastic bin area only accessible by tenants following reports of regular fly-tipping and builders waste dumped at the old bin area which was on the main road.

Line marking in car parks, city wide

Following requests from tenants, new spaces have been marked out in housing car parks to help ease parking problems.

Canopy cleaning, city wide

Rubbish has been cleared from canopies over the front entrances to walk up blocks.

Non-slip stair edgings, city wide

The team has been busy re-applying yellow non-slip tape on the stairs in several over 50s blocks.

New garden area at Gallia Court, Portswood

An unused and unloved outdoor area has been transformed. The team removed shingle, rotten decking and a dividing fence before turfing the whole area to create a new grassed area for residents, as well as a new bin area at the front of the block.

Jet washing programme, city wide

With warmer weather on the way, the team will be jet washing external drying and bin areas.

Clearing shopping trolleys, city wide

The team put time aside recently to clear abandoned shopping trolleys. As well as being a blight on neighbourhoods, dealing with abandoned trolleys takes the Neighbourhood Wardens away from their duties so please always make sure you return your trolley to the supermarket, or if you spot an abandoned trolley report it using the Trolleywise app.

If you have an idea or suggestion that you would like to put forward to improve your Neighbourhood just talk to your local Neighbourhood Warden, Local Housing Office, or attend the walkabout for your area.
