Keep fit and keep smiling

Staying active whatever your age is a crucial part of keeping healthy – both physically and mentally. During the lockdown we might not be able to go to the gym, play group sports or enjoy a walk in the park with friends, but there’s lots of simple ways to keep active and keep fit at home. And the best news is you won’t have to spend a penny or even put on your lycra!

Regular exercise helps to keep us feeling good, it can brighten our mood and combat stress, depression and anxiety – a much needed antidote to the global COVID-19 pandemic. Just because you’re stuck indoors doesn’t mean you can’t keep active. We’ve rounded up some great online activities to keep everyone, from toddlers to pensioners, moving and feeling positive.

Join the #StayInWorkOut movement launched by Sport England which has lots of creative ways on how to get active at home, with exclusive offers and free workouts aimed at all ages and fitness levels. The site includes home exercise workouts including cardio, dance, yoga, Pilates and much more. Or access free celebrity workouts from famous trainers including The Body Coach Joe Wicks who provides a daily PE lesson for school kids at 9am every weekday.

Change4Life has lots more fun ideas to help get children moving including quick 10-minute shake-up games featuring favourite Disney characters.

And older people are encouraged to stay active by having a go at the NHS seated exercises which help improve mobility and prevent falls.

If you do leave home to go for a walk or a jog, please remember to stay at least two metres from others at all times. Our city parks remain open for daily exercise but remember to keep your distance from other people and only exercise alone or with the people you live with. Tennis courts and other sports facilities and playparks are closed at this time.
