Junior Neighbourhood Wardens help launch after school club
The free club, which takes place every Friday in term time, 4-6pm, has been organised by our Junior Neighbourhood Wardens scheme in partnership with the Southampton Children’s Play Association (SCPA).
The aim is to provide children and young people with opportunities to enjoy positive activities such as art, crafts, cooking, gardening, and team building games that will help to nurture respect and community spirit.
Organisers Ian Mitchell and Anna Roberts say that for many local children who live in flats without access to a garden, the club provides welcome time to enjoy fun and games in the fresh air and a safe space. At the first session which took place in February, slime making was especially popular!
Ian says: “We have exciting plans including launching a walking track and outdoor gym through the club later in the year and are looking into an X Factor-style talent show, which has been suggested by the children. We’re looking for volunteers to support the club, particularly Maths and English tutors (past or present) to help those children who ask for assistance with their homework.”
The Junior Neighbourhood Warden scheme is open to young people over seven years old across the city and offers a range of fun and educational events and activities throughout the year - for free.
If you could offer your time to help at the club or provide tutoring, please contact Ian Mitchell via Facebook. All volunteers will receive volunteer training and a free DBS check.
