Help reduce pressure on our emergency services
Hampshire Fire & Rescue Service has received a significant increase in call outs to deal with garden fires in recent weeks. Please remember fires are not allowed on council property.
Some gardeners have been lighting fires to dispose of garden waste. If you have garden waste to get rid of and you’re not part of the green waste collection service you can turn it into home compost. This will nourish your plants and improve your soil. Check out the Gardeners World website for lots of ideas to reduce or use up your garden waste. Although our green waste collection service was temporarily suspended it has now resumed.
As many house fires start in the kitchen it’s important to remember to stay alert when you’re cooking and always keep an eye on the hob. Here are some tips to help you stay safe in the kitchen:
- Avoid using a chip pan at all costs. They are the cause of lots of fires which injure thousands of people every year in the UK. If you want to cook chips at home buy oven chips.
- Keep flammable items like papers and tea towels away from the hob where they could easily catch alight.
- Unplug electric appliances like toasters, kettles, microwaves and coffee makers when not in use (this will help save money on your electricity bill).
- Don’t use metal in the microwave.
- Wipe up spills and keep your hob clean as grease build-up is flammable.
Stay safe
We have an ongoing fire safety programme but you can also play your part in helping to keep your home and neighbourhood safe. Follow our useful fire safety advice below:
- Never leave tumble driers unattended.
- Avoid lighting candles at home.
- Don’t smoke in bed.
- Unplug your laptop and phone charger overnight.
And if you live in a flat, remember to always keep communal areas clear of rubbish and clutter.
