Junior Neighbourhood Wardens Sports Day

Free summer sports and play day

The Junior Neighbourhood Wardens will be taking over the city’s annual Summer Play Day this July and giving the event a sports day theme.

The free event will take place on Friday 26 July in Hoglands Park in the city centre between 10am and 2pm, when children and young people will be encouraged to have a go at different sports including football and tennis. It’s a chance to try out a new sport, have fun and keep active. There’s no need to book, just pop along on the day and join in the fun!

As well as sports, there will also be lots of other free, fun games and activities for the whole family plus a bouncy castle. Refreshments and face painting will be available for a small charge.

The Southampton Play Day has been a well-loved summer fixture in Hoglands Park for the past 10 years. This year’s sports day themed event will be the first time with the council’s Junior Neighbourhood Wardens in charge.

The event is just part of a busy calendar of fun activities and community projects run as part of the Junior Neighbourhood Wardens scheme, which also include gardening, litter picking, fundraising and creative projects like creating murals and mosaics. The popular Junior Neighbourhood Warden programme is open to 7-12 year olds, and many have gone on to become Team Leaders (open to 13-18 year olds) to continue their involvement with the scheme and to pass on their skills and knowledge to younger children. The programme provides children with the opportunity to make new friends, learn new skills, build self-confidence and become positive role models in their communities. All participants receive a free membership card that provides access to exclusive benefits and discounts including £1 swim, £1 gym, £5 kayaking and £5 Ringo sessions all courtesy of Active Nation.
