School summer holidays don’t have to cost the earth, there are lots of free or low cost ways to keep the kids occupied this August – just read on to find out more!

Free kids’ activities and school meals in the summer holidays

If your child receives benefit-related free school meals, you can sign them up to take part in the Southampton Holiday Activities and Food programme where they can enjoy fun activities and access a hot meal every day during the summer holidays.

There are thousands of free sessions on offer across the city for children aged four to 16, including sports, computers, cookery, art, music, dance, and lots more. Check the full programme of activities and book your child’s free place (available on a first come first served basis).

Free concert at Southampton Pride

Head to the Guildhall Square for the Big Pride Weekend on August Bank Holiday 24 and 25 August for a free, family and dog friendly event. The weekend promises to be a celebration of identity and includes live music performances with an amazing lineup of artists including Claire Richards and Sonia!

Free family art trail

Explore the local area by taking part in Light the South, a spectacular free family art trail featuring 40 large Lighthouse sculptures. Organised by Southampton Hospitals Charity, the trail also includes smaller Little Light sculptures, decorated by local schoolchildren, that are displayed inside some of the city’s most iconic tourist, cultural, and leisure locations.

And don’t forget that a visit to Southampton City Art Gallery, located in one side of the Civic building, next to the Central Library is completely free of charge. Plus, Southampton Art Gallery along with our other cultural venues SeaCity and Tudor House all offer low cost fun, family activities during the school holidays including art, craft, and history sessions just check the full programme.

Join the Junior Neighbourhood Wardens scheme and enjoy free activities and exclusive discounts

Children and young people aged 7 to 12 can sign up for our fun, free Junior Neighbourhood Wardens scheme to take part in regular community projects and fun activities. Plus, all participants receive a free membership card that provides access to exclusive benefits and discounts including £1 swim, £1 gym, £5 kayaking, and £5 Ringo sessions all courtesy of Active Nation.
