Enjoy summer safely

After weeks stuck indoors during the lockdown, it’s lovely to get outdoors and enjoy the warm summer weather now that restrictions are easing. Barbecues are a perfect way to celebrate summer, but before you light up the coals please remember that barbecues are not allowed on balconies as they pose a fire risk.

If you don’t have access to a garden, you can still enjoy a barbecue in one of the city’s magnificent parks or green open spaces but please act responsibly. Make sure you read our safety guidelines and do not put disposable barbecues in bins where they could easily catch alight. Check out the barbecue safety guide complied by Hampshire Fire & Rescue Service before you start grilling.

If you’ve got a gas barbecue, be be mindful of where to keep the gas bottle. These should never be kept in cupboards with electrics, and likewise flammables or aerosol cans should not be kept in electric cupboards as they pose a potential fire risk. If you aren’t sure where to store your gas barbecue or flammables, just talk to your Local Housing Office.

Now that lockdown restrictions have eased and we can get out in the fresh air, don’t let children play in roads and car parks. If you don’t have any outdoor space at home why not take the family to one of the city’s fantastic green spaces and parks to burn off some energy and enjoy the sunshine?

And whenever you visit one of our parks or open spaces, remember to respect social distancing guidelines by keeping at least two metres from other people at all times.
