Coronation fever heats up!

Many of our tenants are busy planning special community celebration events to mark next weekend’s historic Coronation, when Charles III will be crowned King.

The whole city will enjoy a party atmosphere as Coronation fever sweeps the country – celebrations include street parties across Southampton and special events planned for our sheltered housing schemes.

Lots of our older residents have got involved in planning events in their sheltered schemes and have even been busy making home-made Union Jack inspired bunting and decorations to adorn communal lounges.

Jacqueline Misselbrook, Activity Coordinator for the west of the city said that afternoon tea parties will be taking place in many sheltered schemes during the week ahead so that residents can come together to celebrate the Coronation: “Many of our sheltered residents can remember the Queen’s Coronation 70 years ago, so it’s going to be very poignant for them to mark the King’s Coronation. We’ve been holding craft sessions for residents to make decorations for the parties and it’s great to see so many people getting involved and having fun together in anticipation of the big day.”

Just some of the sheltered housing schemes that will be holding celebration events include Milner Court on Thursday 4 May, Rozel Court on Friday 5 May and Manston Court on Saturday 6 May.

The Coronation afternoon tea events are just part of a varied programme of activities to help sheltered housing tenants keep active – both physically and mentally. Other regular activities on offer in communal lounges include lunch clubs, arts, crafts, knitting, crochet and exercise sessions.

If you live in sheltered housing and would like to attend a Coronation party, or to find out about other activities in your scheme please email our Activity Coordinators.

The Coronation Weekend

The three-day bank holiday weekend marking the royal event will include the Coronation of His Majesty The King at Westminster Abbey on Saturday 6 May, followed by a special Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle on Sunday 7 May 2023. On Bank Holiday Monday 8 May, neighbours and communities are invited to get together for The Coronation Big Lunch, and on the same day members of the public are invited to have a go at volunteering by taking part in The Big Help Out. If you’re planning a Big Lunch in your neighbourhood, or you’ll be rolling up your sleeves to join in The Big Help Out please let us know and you could feature in the next Tenants’ Link!
