Block reps making a difference

Look out on noticeboards for a photo and contact details of your local block or street rep who you can talk to if you have any issues, problems or ideas you want to raise

We’re looking for more tenants to volunteer as block or street reps, to represent their neighbours and work with us to resolve local issues. It’s a rewarding role that can pay dividends for your neighbourhood – as two block reps explain.

Anna has recently undertaken the block rep role at Shirley Towers. She says she wanted to give something back to her local community after living in the block for 12 years.

“I really love living here but I feel strongly that the block is missing a community room or space for residents to get together, especially for families with children,” Anna said. “There are 150 flats here and nowhere for people to meet for a coffee or for children to play, so I spoke to the Local Housing Office about the possibility of converting one of the former drying areas. They encouraged me to become a block rep to take this idea forward and I will be working with the council to gain permission and apply for funding to pay for paint and equipment to make Shirley Towers better for everyone.”

As well as working with neighbours and the council to find opportunities to improve neighbourhoods, block reps are also on hand to advise local residents with queries or problems, as Brenda from Wyndham Court explains:

“As block rep I am the link between residents and the council. People can come to me if they have an issue that needs sorting and I can direct them to the right council team, show them how to use the website to report issues like repairs online, or liaise with the council on their behalf. Recently I have raised tenants’ concerns about security following damage to a wooden gate, and I will be working with the council to ensure it is replaced with a steel barrier. I have been here for 35 years and am proud to be a block rep to help keep it such a nice place to live.”

If you would like to volunteer as a block or street rep to represent your neighbours and work with us ensure your area is better maintained and a nicer place to live, please complete the online form, email or call our Tenant Engagement Team on 023 8083 3185.

It is a voluntary role, but we are happy to cover any out-of-pocket expenses.
