Antisocial tenant receives their marching orders

A resident who made the lives of his neighbours a misery has been evicted from a Southampton council block as a result of antisocial behaviour.

Housing staff worked closely with the police to take action and restore peace to the local community.

The case involved an individual who privately rented a flat from a leaseholder in the central area of the city. Neighbours in the block began complaining about antisocial behaviour including drug-related issues, noisy visitors buzzing neighbour flats, fighting, damage to the property and the communal areas. With vulnerable residents living close by and the local community adversely affected by one man’s behaviour, we quickly took action and liaised with the property owner in an attempt to resolve the situation.

Unfortunately, the leaseholder was slow to take any action against their tenant and with no improvement in the situation, we worked with the police and our Legal Services team to threaten forfeiture action in order to take back the lease. This led to the leaseholder taking eviction action through the courts, which resulted in the resident being evicted. With the departure of the troublemaker, the antisocial behaviour has now ceased and neighbouring residents can once again feel safe.

This is just the latest case to demonstrate that we can and do take action against those who behave antisocially in our neighbourhoods. So if you are being affected, please let us know by reporting antisocial behaviour online or call your Housing Office on 023 8083 3006. Remember, if you or someone else is in immediate danger or a crime is in progress, always dial 999 immediately.

As this case demonstrates, we always aim to resolve reports of antisocial behaviour as swiftly and effectively as possible, but if you or your community have an ongoing issue that you don’t feel is being properly resolved did you know that you can request an ASB Case review? This gives victims of antisocial behaviour the right to request action starting with a review of the case, in order to find a resolution.

If you or your neighbours have reported three instances of antisocial behaviour over the last six months, and it appears that no action has been taken to address the issue, you can request a review to look into it the situation. To do this, simply contact Hampshire & Isle Of Wight Constabulary on the non-emergency number 101. The police will then liaise with us to review what action has already been taken and decide if additional actions are appropriate to help find a solution.
