A clean sweep for Junior Neighbourhood Wardens

Children from Mason Moor Primary School are swapping the classroom for organised walks around the local community to learn about environmental issues thanks to a partnership with our Junior Neighbourhood Warden scheme to promote citizenship and build pride in the neighbourhood.

With support from our Neighbourhood Wardens and Waste and Recycling teams, the school is taking pupils out on regular walks to help keep the neighbourhood clean and tidy whilst promoting healthy living. As well as picking up litter the children will learn about what can and can’t be recycled in Southampton. They will also be encouraged to report any other environmental issues they spot locally – such as fly tipping, graffiti or abandoned vehicles – with a direct line through to the Junior Warden Co-ordinator.

This latest litter picking project follows on from the successful pilot scheme that the Junior Neighbourhood Wardens launched with St Mary’s Primary School earlier this year. Both projects are sponsored by the council’s contractor CLC Group who kindly agreed to supply high-vis tabards and litter-picking equipment to the schools.

It is just one of the ways that our Junior Neighbourhood Warden scheme is helping children and young people to foster respect for their neighbourhood and get involved in positive activities. The scheme is open to all 7-13 year olds in the city so if you, or someone you know, would like to find out more about becoming a Junior Neighbourhood Warden please get in touch.
