Family hubs - mental health support
Becoming a new parent can be a huge upheaval mentally as well as physically. There are a range of services available in Southampton as well as at Family Hubs which offer support for new carers and parents.
Perinatal mental health problems occur during or after pregnancy. Mood changes are normal at this time, but if you are not enjoying things like you used to and feeling low you may want to talk to someone at a Family Hub, midwife, health/ social worker or GP.
Possible symptoms of perinatal mental health conditions:
- Experiencing a low mood, sadness
- Feeling irritable, guilty, hopeless
- Having negative thoughts or not wanting to eat
- Losing interest in the world and people around you
What is normal? This will look different for everyone. Watch this video with Dr Alain Gregoire – Perinatal Psychiatrist about How do I know what's "normal"?.
Family Hub dad, Sydney, opens up about the ups and downs of fatherhood and why coming to hubs is incredibly important to supporting his mental health as parent in this video: Meet Family Hub Dad: Sydney.
