The 1870 map of Southampton
The 1870 Ordnance Survey map or town plan of Southampton was surveyed in 1868 and published in 1870 at the Ordnance Survey Office in Southampton.
This highly detailed plan covers a fairly limited area, including the old town centre and docks, St Mary's, Northam, Bevois Town, The Polygon and Bedford Place.
It extends westwards to just beyond Four Posts Hill and northwards to Archers Road and just north of Lodge Road.
There are 40 sheets to the plan, at the scale of 10.56 feet to one mile (1/500).
The Southampton town plan is highly detailed, with ground floor plans of all public buildings and the layouts of parks and private gardens.
